    Management Information Systems: Concepts and Practices

    Advisory prerequisite(s)
    You are advised to have already studied BIS B121 or BIS B123.

    Aims
    This course aims to provide students with an overview of the organization and functions of common information systems in organizations, and equip them with fundamental knowledge of the database and networking technologies that support all business information systems in general. In addition, the course will enable students to identify common problems and possible solutions in information systems management and gain a solid understanding of information systems security and risk management.

    Contents
    This course covers the following topics:

    • Information systems: Concepts and management

    • Information systems: Organizations and strategy

    • IT infrastructure and telecommunications networks

    • Data and information management

    • Security and risk management

    Learning support
    There will be five two-hour tutorials.

    Assessment
    There are two assignments and one examination. Students must use word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) to prepare the assignments, and submit the assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

    Online requirement
    This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. Course materials are available in print form but you can also access them online. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.

    Equipment
    Students will need to have access to a Windows-based personal computer with an Internet connection.
